FAMILY HERITAGE
I belong to the Basu Roy Chowdhury family of village Algee, district Faridpur in erstwhile East Bengal, India and now Bangladesh. My wife hails from the Bhattacharys family of Halisahar, West Bengal, India. We are three brothers and two sisters in our family. Some of us use the surname ‘Basu’ (which is synonymous with ‘Bose’) dropping ‘Roy Chowdhury’, and vice versa. Our family was displaced from East Bengal, India now Bangladesh following the partitioning of India into two countries. Initially, we tried to settle at Kolkata, India. We rented a flat there: 119, Vivekanand Road, Kolkata-700006, West Bengal, India. One of my nephews is still leaving there. I lost my father when I was of two years age. From Kolkata we shifted to Jamshedpur, Jharkhand (erstwhile Bihar) when I was around eight years old. My mother took a job as a Primary School teacher at Jamshedpur and our family shifted from Kolkata to Jamshedpur. My family shifted from Jamshedpur to Varanasi after I had taken a teaching job at Banaras Hindu University.
